MBTS: Why Shouldn’t We Pay More for Our Water?

Posted

To the Editor,

After being present in a couple of our Town’s Board Meetings recently where our Drinking Water was one of the subjects discussed and after reading last week’s article in which Mr. Chuck Dam, Director of the Manchester Dept. of Public Works explained about PFAS in the water and what we should do about it, I wonder:

Why the residents of Our Town do not value Our Drinking Water as other important things in their life?

Why the residents of Our Town do not think that it is important to maintain its quality?

Why the residents of Our Town do not understand what is best for them and their families?

According to Mr. Dam: When the pond is full and the groundwater at LSW is high, we are less likely to draw in contaminants from the surrounding watershed.

Conserving water at some scale will ensure that we do not overly draw down LSW or unnecessarily lower the level of Gravelly Pond.

And, all of the approved treatment processes under consideration should remove PFAS down to non-detect limit with today’s current testing.

We spend millions of dollars to build Schools, Sports’ Facilities, Playgrounds, Focal Structures and their maintenance, etc. for our Town’s children and its residents.

When the cost of everything else in our daily life goes up in price and we don’t seem to argue about it, why shouldn’t we pay more for Our Drinking Water?  And the more water is used per property, maybe per hundred gallons, the higher the rate should be!!

Our Drinking Water is the most valuable thing in our life and the most undervalued.  We cannot live without potable drinking water.

We have to do everything possible to maintain its quality and to conserve it.  It is the most important thing and it should be for everyone, no matter the cost!!

It has been the least expensive necessity in our lives up to now!!
