Madeleine S. (Scullin) McLean, age 92, wife of the late Carden Ralph McLean, passed in her own home in Salem on July 14, surrounded by children and family. She was born in Boston to the late Richard James and Mary (Lennon) Scullin. She attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart School in Newton, and graduated from Katherine Gibbs School. She celebrated her marriage to Carden Ralph McLean on July 26, 1953. They lived together in Lakehurst, New Jersey, Williamstown, Massachusetts, then Lawrenceville, NJ.

After her husband's passing in 1963 she moved with her children to Manchester. She worked as secretary to the principle at Memorial School in Manchester, before moving to Boston to work as a legal secretary for Hutchins, Wheeler, and Dittmar. She returned to Manchester upon retirement. She enjoyed gardening, traveling with her children, and explored past and distant people and places through her passion for biography, historical fiction, history, and art and architectural history. Her greatest love was staying in close touch with close friends, with her children, grandchildren, and with her sisters and brother, exchanging visits that led her to travel up and down the East Coast and to Europe.

Surviving her is a son, Alick McLean, and his wife Michele Errie-McLean of Salem; a daughter, Susie McLean of Cambridge, two sisters Gretchen Simpson of Falmouth, Maine, Marijeanne Dengler of Wayland; four grandchildren, Sophia, Gaia, Samson, and Seforah. She was predeceased by a daughter, Lorna Ruth McLean, a brother, Richard Scullin; and a sister, Elizabeth Bernard.

A graveside service will be held at Rosedale Cemetery, Manchester by the Sea on July 27 at 12:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home 525 Cabot Street Beverly. Information, directions, condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com
