Phil Anthony, a longtime resident of Peabody, passed away peacefully at his home in Costa Mesa, CA on January 22nd after a recent illness.

Phil was born in Peabody in 1941. During his childhood, his passion was baseball. When the Red Sox started spring training, Phil and his brother Bob would shovel snow off the driveway to play catch. Newspaper reports from the late 40’s and early 50’s noted Phil as an outstanding pitcher in his youth.

In 1959, Phil graduated from Peabody High, where he played baseball and basketball. He married Elizabeth “Betty” (Callahan) Anthony in 1962, and they raised their three children on James Street.

Phil coached Little League for years. He took an all-star team to the regionals in New York, and he served a tenure as the president of Peabody Little League.

Phil worked for 30 years as a UPS driver, and he spent most of his years serving Manchester, Essex and Magnolia.

In his spare time, Phil watched the Red Sox, played softball, went to Wonderland to watch the greyhound racing, enjoyed ice cream sodas from Treadwell's, played golf, and hung at coffee shops with local friends.

Phil married his second wife, Mary (Seiler / Kneeland) Anthony, in Costa Mesa, CA, where they spent the last 12 years of his life together.

Phil is survived by his wife, Mary, his sister Mary McNichol of Framingham, his brother Robert "Bob" Anthony of East Falmouth, his daughter Catherine "Cathy” Mullins of Beverly, his son Philip “Tiger” Anthony of Chicago, Richard “Rick” Anthony of Boston, and his six grandchildren.
