Manchester resident James D. Black, 81, died peacefully on March 3.
Born August 14, 1939, in Rome, New York, he was the son of the late George and Elizabeth (Jenkins) Black. Jim was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and the Wharton School. After serving four years in the Navy, he joined the Scott Paper Company, later known as Sappi.
Jim enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved sailing, skiing, his motorcycle, dog trials, bird hunting, physics, and fishing. Family was always the most important joy in his life.
Jim is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Sara “Sally” Black, his son John and his wife Gail of Scituate, MA and adored grandchildren Katherine and Ryan. He also leaves his brothers Peter (Barbara) of Ninole, Hawaii, Jeffrey (Barbara) of Saranac Lake, New York, Jeremey (Jennifer) of Silver Spring, Maryland, and his sister Martha of Cornwall, New York. He was predeceased by his brother Christopher. He loved and thoroughly enjoyed meeting his nieces, nephews, and their families.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greater Beverly YMCA, 254 Essex St., Beverly, MA 01915.
