A Classical Turn On

Posted

Last week, five members of the Cape Ann Symphony embarked on a three-day, whirlwind tour of schools on the North Shore – from Rockport to Salem – to introduce young students to classical music and instruments in a fun way that was right in their backyards.

Called the CAS “Youth Initiative,” the program is aimed at all fourth and fifth graders on Cape Ann and beyond. It began last week with quick demonstrations at 11 elementary schools, including one Wednesday at Manchester Memorial School.

This Friday (January 31) the Cape Ann Symphony will play at Manchester-Essex Regional High School. This year’s program features the Star-Spangled Banner, Hoe-Down, Star Wars and Gloucester's Rob Bradshaw's multimedia orchestral piece for orchestra with a narration (by Heidi Dallin) of Virginia Lee Burton's classic children’s book, Katy and the Big Snow.  During the narration and playing of Bradshaw’s piece, illustrations from the cherished book will be projected above the orchestra.

For us adults, there are still opportunities this season to see the CAS for yourself. The next concert in the season is 2 p.m. Sunday, March 22 at Manchester-Essex High School. One performance only.
