Letter To The Editor: Manchester’s Gulls: Chippy

Posted

To the Editor,

After a restful, salty hour at Singing Beach early Friday evening (7-22-2022) inhaling the oceanic fragrance while little kinds scurried about, I drove to the Masconomo Park parking lot, parked my car and walked across the street to Cap’n Dusty’s for a double fudge brownie ice cream cone.

While walking and licking my cooling dolce vita back to my car, SUDDENLY, and without warning, I was attacked by a winged invader that snatched my cone and ice cream out of my hand!  It was an unexpected and unwelcome thud across the back of my head and my double fudge brownie was on the grass before me while the gray-and-white winged thief squealed and protested at my attempt to banish the bird.

I’ve been a frequent visitor to Manchester, Singing Beach and carnivals at Masconomo with my twin daughters when they were younger, but never was accosted by its resident gulls.  Perhaps some hesitant pecking for a random potato chip morsel, but never attacked as today.

Future trips to Cap’n Dusty’s will require great vigilance and perhaps a tennis racquet to ward off airborne attacks.

Best,

Bob DeFelice
