90 Years Ago – 1930

The Fire Department answered a call from box 41 last Sunday.  They found a brisk grass fire near the West Manchester Depot which was quickly extinguished, with little or no damage.

75 Years Ago – 1945

E.F. Wogan, Roland P. Brooks, Orren Chadwick, George E. Diamond and John McInnis attended the Sam Snead golf exhibition Sunday at the United Shoe Golf Club.

Eight young men and sixteen ladies made up the 1945 graduating class at Story High School at Horticultural Hall.  John Conlon and John Cogans were the Marshals.

60 Years Ago – 1960

Parents and friends of the pupils of Mrs. Fred Nickless, Jr. were thrilled with the delightful recital at the Congregational Chapel.  The program was enjoyable throughout and showed the fine ability of these students.

Chief Andrews of the Police Department reports that since the inception of the dial telephone system in Manchester, several complaints have been made to the station by persons who have received anonymous calls.

45 Years Ago – 1975

The Manchester Cribbage League held their Awards Night and Banquet at the Oceanside Restaurant in Magnolia.

The Manchester Fire Department officially moved into their new quarters on School Street this week.

30 Years Ago – 1990

Richard Ashton Hammond, 86, Manchester’s first permanent fire chief, passed away in Pinehurst, N.C.  Chief Hammond formerly resided at 50 Pine Street.

Former Town Clerk, Edward P. Gavin, Sr. passed away unexpectedly.  He served the town of Manchester as Town Clerk from 1981 – 1987.

15 Years Ago – 2005

The Board of Selectman is seeking volunteers interested in serving on the Historic District Commission.

The Manchester Fire Department is pleased to announce a community CPR REFRESHER class that will be held on Tuesday, June 28 from 6 – 10 p.m.
