90 Years Ago – 1930

The Essex County Club’s new clubhouse, which has been built to take the place of the one totally destroyed by fire on March 14, 1913, was dedicated this week.  This magnificent new home takes high rank with most famous country clubs.

The highest award in typewriting at Story High, for the year, was won by Beacher Hodgon, his net speed being 65 words per minute.

75 Years Ago – 1945

Robert R. Hatcher, Jr., won the Manchester Woman’s Club Nathan B. Sargent Scholarship award.

Mrs. Lena Sargent, who has for the past 36 years been teaching in the Manchester public schools, is retiring from her teaching duties this week. 

60 Years Ago – 1960

The 150th anniversary of the Church School of the Orthodox Congregational Church was observed last Sunday. 

For the first time in the 10-year history of the Cape Ann Baseball league, Story High School emerged the victors. 

45 Years Ago – 1975

Donald L. Goodwin was named chairman of the Finance Committee at an organizational meeting held on Tuesday evening at Town Hall.

The phone directory, to be published by Troop 82 Boy Scouts, will be delivered door to door and will include a listing of all Manchester phone numbers and will have its own advertising section.

30 Years Ago – 1990

Shore Nursery School held its 37th annual graduation on Friday with 33 graduates receiving their diplomas from Director Mrs. Robert McDiarmid and Co-Director and head teacher, Mrs. Toby Nicols.

Manchester resident, Mrs. Jessie Trimmer, age 83, competed in a Masters Swim meet held at Salem State College and swam the 200 yard backstroke in which she set a New England record for her age group. 

15 Years Ago – 2005

Thanks to the efforts of various town agencies and committees, Manchester now has several fully accessible outdoor recreation areas.

The high energy team of Charles Waters and Carl Lombardi from Poetry Alive theatrically performed over 10 poems for all of the children at Memorial School on Thursday, June 9.
