90 Years Ago – 1930 

Herbert Boyd, clerk at Allen’s Drug Store, drowned at Singing Beach.  He was 47 years old and married with one child. 

Manchester was threatened with a herring invasion in the lower harbor as immense schools of fish appeared.  They were driven in by unknown larger fish.  

75 Year Ago – 1945 

One-hundred-and-fifty children attended the children’s party held at the Essex County Club under the direction of Mrs. Kirk Neal.  

Inclement weather throughout the week has left swimming classes at Singing Beach at a standstill. 

60 Years Ago – 1960 

A 1,000 lb. shark was photographed swimming a mile off-shore at Singing Beach by Joe Venzslowsky in his Pembroke launch.  

The Manchester Junior-Senior High School Building Committee awarded Singleton Construction Co., of Tewksbury a contract for the construction of the new school. 

45 Years Ago – 1975

Anne Lane retired from the staff of the Manchester public Library after 31 years of continual service.  

The Bowforte Ensemble performed in the music room of the Schlaikjer residence on Boardman Avenue in the first of two events sponsored by the St. Johns choir of Beverly Farms.  

30 Years Ago – 1990 

The Town Clerk’s office continued pleas for a donation of an office computer.  Data storage consists of handwritten entries for beach stickers and lists of current voters, licenses, vital records, etc.  were still solely maintained by pen and paper. 

John Olson, principal of Olson Lewis Architects & Planners in Manchester, was designing three resort hotels in Egypt. 

15 Years Ago – 2005 

After several meetings and a public hearing, the Selectmen have approved various changes to the time requirements and use of parking spaces in the downtown and town parking lots.  Signs have been ordered and will be installed soon. 

The Manchester Chamber of Commerce is bringing the circus back to Manchester on Friday, July 22.  There will be two shows at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Masconomo Park.
