90 Years Ago – 1930 

The new curtain for the Town Hall stage has been completed by the artist Mr. Anderson and represents the ship “Arbella” entering Manchester harbor with Governor Winthrop.  

Sunday was a big day at Singing Beach, the auto traffic being heavy all day.  Autos were parked all the way from the beach to Tappan Street, besides filling the Sullivan Field parking space. 

75 Years Ago – 1945 

After a rest period of three years, due to war-time conditions, the Manchester Elder Brethren Association will once again hold its annual outing this summer. 

Tops to male bathing suits, so hard to purchase, will not be needed at Singing Beach anymore, according to an edict that was recently issued by the Park Board, and the males may now feel free to parade their stately forms along our singing sands, clothed in mere swim trunks. 

60 Years Ago – 1960 

A very delightful three-day Fourth of July program was enjoyed by hundreds of Manchester residents and their guests, and all proved perfect.  The only thing that marred an otherwise perfect weekend was the pre-setting of the legion Bonfire by three irresponsible young men whose identity, unfortunately, is as yet unknown. 

45 Years Ago – 1975 

Buddy Bachry has earned a job as a batting practice pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. 

The annual meeting of the Seaside Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs. Frederick Bundy, Jr.  Barbara Watson was elected as President, Dottie Ryan as Vice-President, Nancy Tataronis, Secretary and Betsy Lynch, Treasurer. 

30 Years Ago – 1990 

It was another great day and another great Fourth of July parade, the biggest and best in more than ten years. 

Manchester Marine Corp. was back in business shortly after a general alarm fire destroyed two of its buildings and three boats.  With the help of many friends, vendors and fellow businessmen, the marina was back on its feet within a week of the fire. 

15 Years Ago – 2005 

Gid’s Giddy Gang entertained the many residents and friends who attended the Lions Club Red White and Blue pancake breakfast. 

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 46 will offer a special weekend version of the basic boating class “Boating Skill and Seamanship.” The intensive two day format of the class is intended for highly motivated students who are interested in developing boating skill or advancing their current skills.
