William S. Youngman


William Sterling Youngman (“Bill”) of Vero Beach, FL passed away on September 24.  He was born in Boston on January 1, 1939, the oldest child of William S. and Elsie Perkins Youngman.  Shortly after his birth the family moved to Washington, DC, where his father worked in the Roosevelt administration.

William attended boarding school in Maryland and continued his education at St. Bernard’s School in New York City, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Harvard College, graduating with the class of 1961. While at Harvard he majored in History, was a business editor of The Harvard Lampoon, and a member of The Hasty Pudding Club, The Speakers Club, and The Fly Club, for which he later served as a member of the Board of Directors.

After graduating from Harvard, William worked as an insurance underwriter for Employers Liability Assurance Corporation in Boston, and American Home Assurance Co. in New York City.  He then attended Fordham University School of Law, graduating in 1970.  Following graduation from Fordham, he became an associate attorney with the international law firm of Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle.

In 1976 he joined the international insurance brokerage firm of Corroon & Black as an in-house counsel responsible for mergers, acquisitions, and professional liability litigation.  In 1992 Corroon & Black merged with Willis, Faber & Dumas, a London-based firm. Bill relocated to Nashville, TN following the merger.

While in Nashville, he married the love of his life, Elisabete Kunde (“Bete”) and they settled in Brentwood, TN with her two children.  They relocated to Portsmouth, NH in 2005 and then to Vero Beach, FL in 2016.

William was a long-time summer resident of Manchester-by-the-Sea.  He was an avid sailor, a member of the Manchester and New York Yacht Clubs, the Essex County Club, and the Harvard Club of New York.  He is survived by his wife Elisabete, her two children, two children of his from prior marriages, and six grandchildren.
