The Manchester Essex Cross Country teams started off the season last Thursday with both the girls and boys teams winning over Georgetown. The Hornets hosted the meet at Singing Beach which allowed the racers to be distanced to meet the Covid 19 protocols. The girls won 15-50 in a forfeit as Georgetown only had 2 girls racing. Senior Co-captain Oli Turner lead the team with 21:35 followed by Jane Whitten 21:54, Mary Anabel Chrzanowski 24:28, Lily Pilaud 26:35, Sarah Braimon 29:30 and Senior Co-captain Anna Whitten 29:36. The boys team won in a convincing 17 to 44 score. Senior Co-captain Will Kenney dominated with a 14:57, 96 seconds ahead of fellow Co-captain Eli Heanue. Eli paced two freshmen runners Mac Edgerton 16:44 and Finn O’Hara 16:44 to capture the first four places. Freshman Connor Burke 17:22 also scored for the Hornets with a 7th place finish. He was followed closely by Colin Harrison 17:27 and Charlie Lations 17:35 to displace Georgetown’s third, fourth and fifth runners. The boys have some good depth this year and will be competitive in the Baker Division of the Cape Ann League. The teams next meet is at Hamilton Wenham on Thursday at Patton Park.
The golf team looks to defend their 2019 title as the Baker Division, Cape Ann League, champs with a compressed schedule over the next several weeks. Sr. Co-captains Charlie Gendron and Sean O’Neil lead an accomplished group of returning players with high hopes for a strong season. The team kicked off the season with five matches last week, posting 3 wins and 2 losses. On Tuesday, Hamilton Wenham visited the Essex County Club and eked out a 133-130 victory over the Hornets. Theo Parianos had an impressive 29 points to lead all players in the match. The following day the team hosted Ipswich and Rockport in the annual Old Cape Ann Classic, and took home the winner’s plaque for the second year in a row with 139 points. Sean O’Neil and Sam Athanas shared medalist honors on the day with 28 points each. The winning streak continued on Thursday at the Black Swan CC. Sean O’Neil again led the way for the Hornets with 26 points in the 122-94 victory over Georgetown. The week ended on a down note on Saturday, as a very strong Newburyport team posted a 169-126 victory at the Rowley CC. Sam Athanas led the way for the Hornets with 25 points. The team continues its busy schedule next week with home matches against Ipswich and Amesbury on Tuesday and Wednesday followed by Thursday’s match at Lynnfield.
