To the Editor,
After several years of advocating for our school budget, I’ve decided to run for School Committee because I’m ready to actively address the challenges we face and help move our district forward—for our students, teachers, district leaders, caregivers, and residents.
As a former high school social studies teacher and department head, I understand the daily demands on educators. As a parent of two boys, ages 8 and 11, I have a personal stake in the future of our public schools and a deep appreciation for how students experience them. My background also includes service with AmeriCorps and partnerships with local nonprofits. I currently serve on the board of Action Inc. and as the Grants Chair for the Spaulding Education Fund. As a community advocate, I value relationships across demographics and believe we are strongest when we work together.
Our schools face tough challenges: rising healthcare costs, competing town priorities, and the strain of annual budget cycles on morale and culture. I can’t promise to solve these problems alone, but I am committed to approaching them with positivity, collaboration, and forward-thinking.
As a School Committee member, I plan to prioritize engagement with all residents and work to ensure consistent, transparent communication between the School Committee and the broader community. Listening to diverse perspectives and fostering collaboration—particularly among the Select Board, Finance Committee, and School Committee—is key. I’ve also worked to strengthen ties with Essex, our regional partner, and will continue that effort. At the state level, I will advocate for initiatives that support our district, including transportation funding, increased per-pupil aid, and state circuit breaker programs that provide financial assistance to offset high-cost special education services.
Over the past few years, I’ve been a vocal advocate for MERSD–you may have seen me at Manchester town meetings at the microphone speaking up for our school budget and other key issues facing our district. I’m grateful to both towns for their support for the budget this spring. I understand that joining the School Committee means shifting from advocacy to governance, collaboration, and long-term planning. I urge those who support public education to continue engaging with the School Committee, Town Meeting, and with our town boards. Your involvement makes a difference.
I believe that public schools are foundational institutions in our society and play a crucial role in setting a course for the future of our young people. I’m honored to seek this role and appreciate your support and engagement.
