Peter Boyd Germond, MD, 91, of Gloucester, MA (formerly of Manchester, MA) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Peter was born on December 14, 1934, to Alice (Boyd) and Henry Germond and was raised in Little Silver, NJ. He lived a rich and meaningful life devoted to his family, his friends, his patients, and the many interests that brought him joy. He was known for his warmth, kindness, loyalty, generosity, and the devotion he had for those fortunate enough to know him.
After graduating from high school, Peter attended Hamilton College in New York, where he played lacrosse. Following college, he was drafted into the United States Army and served for two years as a member of the U.S. Army Chemical Corp, stationed in Utah. During his time there, he developed a lifelong passion for skiing and became an expert skier in Park City.
Peter went on to earn his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College, graduating in 1964. He completed his internship and surgical residency training at Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich, CT and his orthopedic residency training at St. Luke’s Hospital Medical Center in New York, NY before establishing his career as an orthopedic surgeon in Beverly, MA. Over the course of his distinguished practice, Peter cared for thousands of patients with skill, dedication, and compassion. Among his many professional accomplishments, he served as Chief of the Department of Surgery at Beverly Hospital, and he performed the first hemi-knee replacement at Beverly Hospital. He also served many years on the Manchester, MA Board of Health.
While Peter took great pride in his medical career, his greatest happiness was often found away from the hospital, particularly on the ocean. He cherished sailing along the New England coast with family and friends, creating countless memories that will remain treasured by those who shared those days with him. He also enjoyed tennis, gardening, reading, model trains, and long walks along the local beaches and trails. He was an active member of the Manchester Bath & Tennis Club and Manchester Yacht Club and could be found at either location during summer days.
Peter had a special love for all animals, especially dogs. He shared a very special bond with his beloved canine companion, George, who predeceased him. He was a passionate advocate for rescuing dogs and believed deeply in giving them loving homes.
Peter is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Virginia “Ginny”, his four children, Heather Callanan and her husband Edward of Fairfield, CT, Suzanne Germond of Gloucester, MA, Peter Germond and his wife Amy of Beverly, MA, and Alison Uzmann and her husband Daniel of Middleboro, MA, and his grandchildren, William Callanan, Cailyn, Julia and Jake Germond, and Tanner and Sadie Uzmann. He will be deeply missed by his family and many close friends, whose lives were made richer by his presence.
He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Alice Germond, his siblings, Henry Germond and his wife Norma Jean of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and Deborah Germond of Little Silver NJ, and his in-laws Gladys and William Henry Jacques of New London, CT.
