The Manchester Essex Regional High School Debate Team celebrated a successful weekend at the Shrewsbury Mardi Gras Tournament, held February 28 at Shrewsbury High School. Competing in the Public Forum debate division, all three MERHS teams posted winning records of 3–2, the mark required to qualify for the Massachusetts State Debate Tournament.
Freddy Jakes and Lily Berkowitz, Abby Borgerson and Stella Langille, and Annabelle Kerivan and Rosie Renehan each delivered strong performances against challenging opponents to secure their spots at States.
“It is exciting to qualify for states because it is something I had been working toward all year,” said Lily Berkowitz.
The Shrewsbury Mardi Gras Tournament featured strong competition from across the region, and the fact that every MERHS Public Forum team qualified for States underscores the depth of talent and dedication on the squad. Each team’s success reflects the growth, skill, and teamwork developed throughout a busy winter debate season.
Looking Ahead
MERHS will continue its busy schedule with the Brookline Ball at Brookline High School on Saturday, March 7, and March Merryness at Needham High School on Saturday, March 21. The team will then compete in the Massachusetts State Debate Tournament from March 27–29, facing the best teams in the state.
