Manchester Essex Regional High School senior Zac Carvalho has been named the 2026 intern for the Boston Sea Rovers, an honor announced earlier this month at the group’s annual International Ocean Clinic.

As part of the program, Carvalho will spend the summer traveling and working with scientists, engineers, underwater photographers and commercial divers, gaining experience in marine science and ocean exploration.

The Boston Sea Rovers internship is awarded annually to a young diver and provides access to fieldwork, mentorship and professional networks in underwater exploration.  The organization’s International Ocean Clinic, now in its 72nd year, is one of the longest-running events focused on diving, marine science and ocean conservation.

Carvalho, who began diving at age six, has developed experience in underwater photography and exploration.  In 2025, he completed 72 dives across five countries, documenting marine environments and building technical diving skills.

He has also participated in an Explorers Club expedition to the Arctic, where he conducted dives above the Arctic Circle.  The experience, he said, reinforced his interest in ocean exploration and conservation.

After graduating, Carvalho plans to attend the University of Rhode Island Honors College to study marine engineering.  He is expected to study under ocean explorer Robert Ballard, who is known for leading the expedition that located the wreck of the RMS Titanic.

Boston Sea Rovers officials said Carvalho was selected for his experience, commitment to ocean science and potential as a future leader in the field.
