Let’s Continue Progress on Housing Policy

Posted

To the Editor,

I am writing to express my personal thanks and appreciation to those who attended Town Meeting and approved the zoning articles proposed by the Planning Board.  I was especially pleased by the overwhelming support for senior housing.  It has been a long time coming and as someone who grew up in Manchester, I think we got it right.

Recent zoning changes may have put a dent in the Town’s reputation as an exclusive and privileged community of naysayers.  We are recognizing that while single-family homes serve much of the town’s population, they are not the best living arrangement for everyone. We should continue to consider zoning laws that promote the best housing opportunities for all residents, not just conventional well-to-do families.  We have to evaluate each residential development on its merits, soundness of design, and compatibility with its neighborhood rather than on strict compliance with arbitrary rules that don’t necessarily protect property values or the natural environment.

I am running for reelection to the Planning Board.  Much has been accomplished in the past few years, but there is more to do.  With your ongoing support and valuable input, we can continue to form the regulatory framework that guides land use and supports a strong, healthy community.  I believe clear, regular communication with all residents is key to this process, and I will work hard to make it happen.  I would appreciate your vote on May 19, and I urge you to vote for John Harden as well.  His design experience will be of great benefit to the Board.
