Cynthia Anne Mitchell, 95, died peacefully surrounded by her three daughters on June 9, 2026, in Exeter, New Hampshire.
Cynthia was known for her beautiful smile, warm heart, and genuine interest in people. Her kindness and caring nature touched the lives of everyone who knew her.
Cynthia was born on September 9, 1930, daughter of the late George H. Hobbs and Josephine A. (Scott) Hobbs, in Beverly, Massachusetts.
Cynthia attended Manchester Story High School, graduating in 1948. She then attended Kathleen Dell Secretarial School in Boston. In 1954, she married her high-school sweetheart Linwood (Pete) Mitchell, a Korean War Veteran who sadly passed in 1978. Cynthia was employed over the years by United Shoe, Parker Brothers, Manchester Elementary School, Manchester Jr.-Sr. High School, Baymart Realty and Edwin Jones Investments. She lived in Daytona Beach, Florida during the 1980’s but returned to New England and resided in New Hampshire for the remainder of her life.
Cynthia absolutely loved the outdoors – whether it was sitting on her beloved Singing Beach, or strolling through the woods with an eye out for birds. She also took up golf in her fifties and memorably scored a hole in one while playing in Florida. She shared her love of wild birds with her daughters and enjoyed going on bird walks or just capturing sightings from the back porch. Other pastimes were rooting for the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. During football season, she especially enjoyed watching the Patriots games with her family.
Cynthia is survived by her three daughters and two sons-in law: Lisa and Chris Maurath of Altadena, California, Debby Johnson of Greenland New Hampshire, and Dee and Lance Helton of Hampton, New Hampshire. She is also survived by her grandchildren Marcus Johnson, Sylvea Suydam, Toby Helton and Owen Helton, her nephews David Hall, Scott McCoy, and Chris McCoy, and her brother-in-law Laurie McCoy. She was predeceased by her husband Linwood Mitchell, her sisters Virgina McCoy and Nancy Hall, her son-in-law David Johnson, and her nephew Jeff Hall
Cynthia cared deeply for and will also be missed by the children of her long-time companion, the late Lawrence Rust: Ellen Albert, Meredith McMorrow, and David Rust.
