To the Editor,
I am writing to all of you on behalf of myself as one of the French teachers and as a parent of a high schooler, not on behalf of MERSD.
As parents of 5th graders and elementary students, you and your child will soon make an important decision - choosing a world language for middle school. At MERSD, students can choose between French or Spanish. Learning a language opens many doors to new opportunities, cultures and perspectives, so the choice needs to be made with consideration.
French is very easy to learn and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. From Canada to Senegal, Belgium to Morocco, Switzerland to Haiti, the Francophone world is rich, varied, and deeply interconnected. Learning French allows students to see that a language is never limited to one country—it is a bridge between many. French is spoken by more than 320 million people across five continents and in over 50 countries. It is a vital language in international relations, diplomacy, science, business, and the arts.
I understand that students often want to choose the same language as their friends. While friendships are important, a language choice should reflect a student's own interests and goals. The most successful language learners are those who choose a language they are genuinely excited to learn. Learning a language is so much more than vocabulary and grammar! It focuses on communication, culture, history, and news. Through projects, music, games, films and conversations, students will develop confidence and meaningful language skills.
Finally, maintaining language options in our schools depends on strong enrollment, and we can do better!
French language was already threatened to be cut in 2023 for financial reasons (Manchester Cricket - May 24, 2023) and it would be devastating for our communities if that came to pass. Providing multiple world language options allows every student to find a path that matches their interests, goals, and aspirations. A strong educational community is one that encourages curiosity, celebrates different cultures, and prepares students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
Thankfully, there is no current budgetary threat to the French program. However, having more students enrolled in French starting in 6th grade ensures that the program remains diverse, vibrant, fun and energetic.
It also makes certain that exciting extracurriculars such as French Club, French Movie Club remain strong, and the always "magnifique" trips to France occur on a regular basis as well. And don’t forget that French also has a special local connection with the beautiful and vibrant French-speaking province of Québec!
I hope to welcome your child into the French program and share the richness of my native French language and Francophone culture.
Merci beaucoup,
Caroline Coshow
Manchester
