As a capstone to last week’s town‑wide Arbor Day celebrations, the area in front of Manchester’s Post Office received a fresh new look with the planting of three native trees and a variety of shrubs, creating an inviting streetscape in the heart of downtown.

In an era defined by speed and convenience, there is a quiet but meaningful shift taking place inside New England homes.

I put my career temporarily on hold and traveled to Africa for an extended period of time, driving a Volkswagen Campmobile from North Africa to South Africa, across the Sahara Desert and into the Central African Republic and the Congo.

After one of the snowiest winters in recent Massachusetts history, it’s hard to picture pansies in pots or tomatoes on vines.  Snowbanks still edge driveways, and the ground remains frozen solid in places.  But inside Cape Ann’s greenhouses, spring is already well underway.

A recent Automotive News headline read, “Automakers regroup after $50 billion electric vehicle debacle,” and no automaker was more burned by that debacle than Porsche.  (OK, maybe Audi, but that’s another story for another day).

For independent bookstores, Christmas comes twice a year: once in December, of course, and the other the last weekend in April, when we celebrate Independent Bookstore Day.

On a recent weekend I made my way to one of my favorite places in Gloucester, the thrift shop Second Glance. Once a year the store hosts a special shopping day featuring some …

This week at the Manchester library we have Hearthside Book Group, Dungeons and Dragons for Kids, and much more.

Spring is when veterinarians start seeing a rise in intestinal parasites—commonly referred to as “worms”—in both dogs and cats.  These parasites are more than a nuisance.  They can affect your pet’s health and, in some cases, pose risks to people as well.

It has been three years since Mom's diagnosis. In that time, she has exhausted all options, from chemotherapy to radiation, and every experimental treatment in between.  We all put our total energy into her "beating" the disease.  She had a huge cheering section.

From time to time over the years, I’ve addressed the issue of flatulence in our pets.  Believe it or not, it’s a common concern among pet owners and I often fielded questions from pet parents about it in my practice.  And they are correct to be concerned.

Unconditional love from pets refers to the unwavering and limitless affection, loyalty, and emotional support that animals, such as dogs and cats, provide to their human companions without any conditions or expectations.  It is a profound bond that exists between a pet and its owner, characterized by genuine care, acceptance, and understanding.

How Legends Are Made

One of my prized possessions, passed down to me by my grandmother, well after my grandfather died, is “Abraham Lincoln: A History,” by John Nicolay and John Hay.  Originally published in 1914 by Century Company, the work is notable in that it runs 10 full volumes.

To put yourself "in the shoes" of an aging loved one managing medications: wear gloves and sunglasses, stand in a dimly lit room, use an outdated medication list, and handle 10 prescription bottles (some probably expired) to experience the difficulty of accurately preparing medications.

When Honda and Toyota emerged as mainstream automotive brands in the 1970s, it was probably true that Toyota benchmarked Mercedes and Honda benchmarked BMW.  Over the decades, Toyota and Honda …

The Generosity of Moussaka

My mother loved to tell the story about the first time she cooked lentils for my grandmother.  It was her first attempt, and she didn’t yet know how much lentils swell as they cook.  She used nearly an entire bag, kept adding broth as they absorbed it, and ended up with enough soup to feed an army.  My grandmother laughed, and the soup was eaten for days.  Nothing was wasted.
