Happy 250th Birthday, America!

In honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this July 4, here’s a reading list to remember, celebrate, and commemorate our country’s history.

This week at the TOHP Essex Burnham Public Library, there’s a summer reading kickoff, a potato chip tasting, open consulting time with a social worker, and more.

This week at the Manchester by the Sea library we have Dungeons and Dragons for Adults, Pride Month-We Were Always Here, Fiber Arts Circle and much more.

Every summer without fail, hot spots were among the most common reasons dogs came through the door at Manchester Animal Hospital. The condition has several clinical names.

The Town of Manchester-by-the-Sea, for quite some time, has identified the need for a suitable location for our seniors to gather.  Over the past few years, that dream has become more of a reality.

With the World Cup underway, it’s time to embrace all things soccer.  The publishing world certainly has.  This season there are new books about all aspects of the game, for both children and adults.

The noted French writer Jean Giraudoux once said, “The secret to success is sincerity, once you can fake that, you’ve got it made.”  And I think that’s where we are now with off-road vehicles in 2026.

With Memorial Day, and the unofficial start of summer, behind us, we have a summer of reading ahead of us. I’ve been planning for months which books to pack in my Bean bag to bring to the dock in Maine in August.

The Cape Ann Community Foundation has awarded grants to seven organizations serving communities across Greater Cape Ann, supporting projects focused on food access, education, cultural programming, environmental stewardship and youth development.

I spent thirty years as the veterinarian at Manchester Animal Hospital, and in that time I became an accidental student of human nature.  You learn things about people when you watch them with their animals.

This week at the Manchester by the Sea Public Library, there’s so much to do, including the Wicked Good Henna event, D & D for Kids, Presidential Series, Journey of Discovery and much more.

This week at the library we have Wiggle Bots, Sashiko Mending and more.

This week at the Manchester by the Sea library we have Pajama Storytime, Hearthside Book Group, Coffee Cupping, and much more.

I read something recently about ants that stopped me cold. Not because it was surprising, but because it confirmed something that I experience first-hand.

Summer in a beach town invites a particular kind of living with doors open, sunlight pouring in and sometimes impromptu social gatherings.  Refreshing your home for the season doesn’t have to require a major investment.

It was 1965.  I walked into my first day at veterinary school and looked around the room. Sixty students.  Two of them women. Just 2. That wasn’t a coincidence.  It was policy.

After celebrating Independent Bookstore Day this past weekend, my heart is full from the sheer volume of book lovers who passed through our store.  After also attending events at the Newburyport Literary Festival, my to-be-read pile has also grown much taller.

As the weather finally begins to warm up on here on Cape Ann, it is time to transition away from heavy, comforting winter meals and look toward light, refreshing tastes that celebrate the arrival of early spring berries.

I've spent thirty years watching ticks turn people's lives upside down.  Not metaphorically, literally.  A tiny arachnid no bigger than a sesame seed, carrying a spirochete bacterium that rewires your nervous system, your joints, your entire existence.  Welcome to Lyme disease, and if you live anywhere near Manchester by the Sea, this is an important reality to address.
