The Legacy of “Couples”

A few years ago, a local book club invited me to join their meeting to discuss “Couples” by John Updike.  As the co-owner of his last local bookstore, I guess they felt I might have some insight to offer on the man and the legend.

In thirty years of small animal practice, I dealt with a long list of genuine emergencies. Trauma, heart failure, severe hemorrhage, acute toxicity.  Each one demanded speed and precision.

The company was first formed in 2020, with original plans to perform Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.”  Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic refrained them from opening the curtains.

This week at the Manchester by the Sea Public Library, there’s Celebrating America’s 250th, Summer Reading for Adults, Hearthside Book Group, the Used Book Collection, and much more.

This week there’s so much happening at the TOHP Essex Burnham Public Library, including a Felted Butterfly Hoops workshop and a DIY monarch butterfly “seed ball” session.  Also, note that the library is now closed on Saturdays for the season.

Fashion may begin on the runway, but in today’s America its influence reaches far beyond clothing racks and designer boutiques.  

The Open Door will once again provide free breakfasts and lunches to children throughout Cape Ann and Ipswich this summer as the region continues to experience elevated levels of food insecurity. …
