Carolyn (Hull) Anderson, the revered oldest resident of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026, having beautifully completed a remarkable 100-year journey of life.
Born on June 9, 1926, to Ida (Hodsdon) and Lester Hull, "Cal" grew up in Gloucester, Massachusetts. A vibrant and natural leader from her youth, she graduated from Gloucester High School in 1944, where she served with distinction as class secretary and treasurer, while dynamically contributing to the Art and Spanish clubs.
Following graduation, Cal took to the skies as a stewardess for several airlines, igniting a lifelong passion for exploring the globe. Her aviation career was marked not only by glamour but by profound courage. In 1952, Cal survived a harrowing plane crash into New York City's East River. Amidst the chaos, her selfless heroism shone brightly: she was widely praised for placing others above herself, even giving away her own life jacket to ensure a passenger’s survival.
Cal’s heart belonged to her family and to the serene shores of Singing Beach in Manchester. Alongside her beloved husband, she traveled the world, always returning home with arms full of unique treasures for those she loved. Cal found pure joy in life's simple pleasures-savoring sweet blueberry muffins, fine chocolates, and raising a glass of Riunite wine. She possessed an indomitable spirit, and nowhere was this more apparent than during family Card Nights, where she played to dominate, filling the room with laughter and friendly competition alongside her siblings.
Her enduring presence and wisdom were woven into the very fabric of Manchester-by-the-Sea, where she was honored for two consecutive years with the town's historic Golden Cane, recognizing her as the community's oldest living resident.
Affectionately known to many as "Aunt Cal," she adored her yearly visits from her dear friend Christine Frank from Colorado. Her profound legacy of love, bravery, and joy lives on through her surviving family: her niece, Nancy Sanborn, and husband Timothy; her nephew, Robert Hull, and wife Kathleen; her nephew, Robert Herdman, and wife Sandy; and her nephew, Kenneth Herdman, and wife Shirley; as well as a generation of deeply loved great and great-great nieces and nephews.
The family extends their deepest, heartfelt gratitude to her exceptionally loyal caregiver, Cheryl Perry, and to her wonderful neighbors, Todd and Ruth Fitzgerald, who so often served as the devoted first responders to Cal's every need. They are also profoundly thankful for the patient, loving staff at Senior Care, the Seacoast Nursing Home, and Care Dimensions, who provided comfort, guidance, and dignity in her final chapters.
Cal now peacefully joins her beloved husband, Urban Anderson; her older sister, Priscilla, and her husband George Herdman; her parents, Ida and Lester Hull; her dear brother, Robert Hull, and his wife Ann; and the countless dear friends who went before her. Her century of light, courage, and unconditional love will never be forgotten.
In accordance with Carolyn's wishes, there will be a private scattering of her ashes. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory would be greatly appreciated to Care Dimensions, 75B Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923 and/or Friends of Seacoast Nursing Rehabilitation 292 Washington St, Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements by Campbell Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester. Information, directions, condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com.
