Varsity Girls Basketball Get the Win Against Salem Academy, 60-31

The M-E Varsity Girls Hornets Basketball beat Salem Academy Charter earlier this week after a busy holiday play stretch in which the Lady Hornets went 1–1, advancing to 2–1 on the season. Against Ipswich, the Hornets struggled to put the ball in the hoop and fell to the Tigers, a key divisional rival, 39–34. The Hornet offense was paced by senior captain Emily Jacobsen who scored 23 of the Hornets 34 points. Jacobsen connected on nine of the 19 field goal attempts including five of eight from beyond the arc. Senior captain Bridget Twombly added three points and 12 rebounds, while Lily Athanas, Emma Fitzgerald, Sophia Pomeroy, and GG Huet added two points apiece. Athanas had five assists and Jacobsen five blocks. Against Lowell Catholic at home, the Hornets struggled to get started and trailed by eight points at half-time. In the second half, the Hornets found their rhythm on both ends of the court taking a one-point lead after three quarters and winning the game 58–50. Junior point guard Lily Athanas led the Hornets with 19 points, including some clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch, as well as six assists and four steals. Emily Jacobsen added 16 points including four/six shooting behind the arc. Bridget Twombly added eight points and eight rebounds while GG Huet had eight points and four blocks in the effort. Juniors Madeline Lai and Bradlee Brooks added three and two points, respectively. Senior Sophia Pomeroy added two points and six key rebounds in a solid defensive effort.
