Hornet's Nest for January 17: Swimming, Track and Basketball

Boys and Girls Indoor Track: It was a productive three days out on the track at the Reggie Center at the first annual Northeast Invitational for the Manchester-Essex track teams. The teams had one school record broken, two junior records broken and two new records established in never-been-run events. Friday night started with Ryan Olivier-Meehan establishing a new record in the 25-lb. weight throw with a toss of 42' 1", which was good for fifth in the meet. On Sunday he tossed the shot 38' 9.5". Eli Heanue ran a season best 5:04.02 in the mile and long jumped 16' 11.25" on Sunday. Logan Cooper ended day one in the mile with a time of 5:49.11.

Saturday was the big day, and it started out with a bang as Will Kenney broke his own junior record in the mile while finishing fourth (4:26.08). Not to be outdone, Mia Cromwell did one better by breaking the school record in the 1000 (3:02.09), which was also good for fourth. Sam Kenney continues to improve in the 1000, finishing seventh with a personal record (2:45.07). In the 600 Elizabeth Loring led the way with a season best (1:53.02), Molly Brady also had a season best (2:01.29) and Althea Hurd rounded out the girls (2:02.76). The boys were led by James Wendell who broke the junior record with a time of 1:31.99. Finn Carlson (1:42.10), Tyler Cronin (personal best of 1:43.47) and Tyler Erdmann (season best of 1:54.90) all ran on the boys’ side. Emerson Kahle (41.83), Jack Morgan (personal best of 42.31) and Luke Zellman (43.46) ran the 300, while Olivia Renzi set a season best (54.24) in the 300.

Sunday showed Andrew Amigo setting a personal best (10.84) in the hurdles and tossing 30' 6.5" in the shot. Josef Vytopil ran 7.76 in the 55 meters while Jack Morgan ran 7.78 for personal best. Josef also tossed the shot 30' 7". Emerson Kahle established a school record in the 200 meters with a time of 25.91. Kendall Carvalho tossed the shot 14' 5.75", rounding out the participation. All in all, it was a great effort for the team. “We can build upon these performances going forward," commented Coach Nelson Desilvestre. The teams returned to action on Tuesday at Andover against Ipswich and will run in the Division 5 state relays on Saturday.

Boys and Girls Basketball: Eight games into the season, the Manchester-Essex Boys Basketball Team has a 7–1 record. “I have a great group of student athletes that work hard every day in practice and games,” said Coach St. Laurent, who is extremely pleased with the effort of the team through the first eight games. “They are great young men that always give it their all every day.”  The team traveled to Masconomet on Tuesday, January 14 and host Georgetown on Friday, January 17.  Coach St. Laurent stated that the fan attendance has been electric, and they have loved the community support at home games. “The players and the coaching staff have loved the fans coming out and cheering on the Hornets,” said St. Laurent. “It really goes a long way and creates a fun atmosphere for all in attendance.”

The Manchester-Essex Girls’ Basketball Team went 1–2 this past week with a non-league victory and losses against two league opponents. On Monday, January 6, the Hornets traveled to North Reading, a Cape Ann Large rival. The game was close for three quarters before the North Reading team pulled away in the fourth and went on to win 55–38. Sophomore Emma Fitzgerald led the Hornets in scoring with 12 points. Junior GG Huet added nine points and Senior Bridget Twombly added eight points and eight rebounds. Seniors Emily Jacobsen and Sophia Pomeroy added five and four points, respectively. Madeline Lai contributed two points.  On Wednesday, January 8, the Hornets hosted Salem Academy Charter. The Hornets built an early lead and kept the strong effort going for the whole game, winning the contest 60–31. Emily Jacobsen led all scorers with 21 points. Junior Bradlee Brooks added nine points and Bridget Twombly eight points and eight rebounds. Junior Lily Athanas scored five points and added seven assists to help pace the offense. Emma Fitzgerald and Madeline Lai added five apiece. Senior Madeline Donnellan Valade, Sophia Pomeroy and GG Huet each added two points and junior Emily Schuh one in the effort.  The Hornets were on the road on Friday, January 10, facing off against Hamilton-Wenham, a Cape Ann Small opponent.  A back and forth game throughout, the Generals came out on top of a 44–39 score. Emily Jacobsen had 13 points in the effort, followed by Bridget Twombly with nine, GG Huet with seven, Lily Athanas with six and Sophia Pomeroy with four. Twombly added 14 rebounds and three assists.  The Hornets have another three-game week, hosting Swampscott on Monday, Masco on Tuesday and traveling to Georgetown on Friday to close out the week.

Boys and Girls Swim: The girls’ swim team prevailed over a strong North Reading team 89–80 on senior night. The effort was led by seniors Maddie Carvalho, who went first in 200 free and second in 200 fly, and Elizabeth Athanas, who had first-place finishes in both the 200 individual medley and 100-breast. Carvalho and Athanas teamed with Shea Furse and Emma Ketchum to win the 200-medley relay and 400 free relay. The boys’ team was led by lone senior Josh Dobson, who finished first in the 200 free and 500 free (with a state-qualifying performance). He also teamed with Sean Phelan, Same Rice and Joaquim Mittermaier to finish first in the 200-medley relay and 400 free relay (also qualifying for states) to help the boys team achieve a 72–50 win over North Reading.
