In The Hornets Nest

There was a lot of action last week with the M-E Hornets.  Here’s a write up for the teams we know about, sent from the team coaches for the paper.  If you have updates you would like to send us, please send them to news@thecricket.com.  Enjoy.

Girls Basketball

The team went 2-1 this past week with victories over Swampscott at home and Georgetown on the road. The defeat came at the hands of league powerhouse Masconoment.

On Monday January 13th the Hornets hosted non-league opponent Swampscott winning 42-25. The Hornets jumped out to a lead in the first quarter and went on to outscore the Big Blue in each of the remaining 3 quarters due to tenacious defense. The Hornets offense was led by Emily Jacobsen with 15 points. Lily Athanas added 7 points and 4 steals in a stellar defensive performance. Emma Fitzgerald also add 7, GG Huet 5, and Sophia Pomeroy 4. Bridget Twombly added 2 points and 9 rebounds and Bradlee Brooks added 2 in the effort.

Tuesday, the 14th, the Hornets hosted Masco. Despite a slow start on offense the Hornets battled back and kept the game close through 3 quarters before going on to fall 42-56. GG Huet led the Hornets offense with 14 points. Bridget Twombly added 8 points and 11 rebounds. Lily Athanas and Emily Jacobsen added 7 points each and Emma Fitzgerald, Sophia Pomeroy and Madeline Donnellan Valade added 2 apiece. Madeline Lai had 7 rebounds in a strong defensive effort.

On the 17th the Hornets jumped out to a 14-2 lead after 1 and never looked back on route to a 54-21 win at Georgetown. GG Huet paced the offense with 17 points and 8 of the teams 32 offensive rebounds. Bridget Twombly had 10, Emily Jacobsen and Sophia Pomeroy added 9 each, Lily Athanas (4) Madeline Lai (2) and Madeline Donnellan Valade (1) rounded out the scoring.

The Hornets ended the week at 5-4 and have another three games next week.

The boys put up a valiant effort on January 15th bowing to Ipswich 56-30 while the shorthanded girls lost 70-11. The boys won 5 of the 9 individual events but lack of depth proved costly as Ipswich was able to gain those valuable seconds and thirds. Sam Kenney (mile 4:57.5), James Wendell (600 1:37.4), Eli Heanue (1000 2:55.1 PR) Wil Kenney (2-mile 10:21.3) and Ryan Olivier-Meehan (Shot 38' 6") were all victors. Emerson Kahle tied for second in the 55 with a PR 7.2, Jack Morgan did the same in the 300 (42.4). Tyler Erdmann was able to run a season best in the 600 (154.6).  Mia Cromwell was the sole winner in the 600 with a new senior record of 1:44.2 which was also a personal best. Elizabeth Loring came in second (1:55.5). Olivia Ford (Mile 7:06.9), Anna Whitten (1000 5:06.9) and Molly Brady (300 52.8) all scored points with third place finishes.

The teams competed at the Division 5 state relays at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday, January 18th. The boys ended up with 8 points while the girls scored 1 point. The Distance Medley Relay set a new school record while finishing 4th with a time of 11:14.87. Sam Kenney ran the 1200 (3:24.7), James Wendell (400 55.5PR), Eli Heanue (800 2:17.2), and Wil Kenney (1600 4:38.1) were the participants. The same 4 teamed up for the 4 x 800 relay to also place 4th with a time of 8:38.94 which was also the 4th fasted time in school history.  On the girls side the lone relay that they participated in was the Sprint Medley which finished 6th with a time of 4:40.20. Olivia Ford put on a different hat and put on her sprinting shoes to start the team in the 200 (36.5), Molly Brady (200 31.2), Elizabeth Loring (400 69.4PR) and Mia Cromwell (800 2:22.7PR) made up the team. It was the 2nd fastest time in school history.

On Monday, January 20th in a make-up meet with Essex Tech held at Andover High School we were missing some key contributors on the boy's side as the team fell to Essex-Tech 49-31 while the girls fell 58-16.  The boys were led by Eli Heanue who tied the school record in the high jump with a leap of 5' 8" which was a tie for first and finished 2nd in the mile (5:34.5). Emerson Kahle won the 55 (7.2), James Wendell also was victorious in the 1000 (3:05.7) as was Ryan Olivier-Meehan in the shot (34' 8.5"). Seconds came from Jack Morgan (300 43.1), and Finn Carlson (600 1:47.8). Thirds were secured by Josef Vytopil (55, 8.0), Ty Cronin (600 1:51.8), and Andrew Amigo (Shot Put 30' 7.5").  On the girls side, Mia Cromwell won the 600 beating her senior record with a time of 1:42.7. Molly Brady was best in the 300 with a personal best 51.6. Elizabeth Loring was second in the 600 (1:58.2). Thirds came from Olivia Renzi (55 9.0), Olivia Ford in the mile (6:50.3), and Anna Whitten in the 1000 with a season best 4:54.7.

The teams last dual meet of the year will be held on January 27th at Reggie Lewis Center.
