A Spectacular Super Bowl Win for Manchester Girls Flag Football

Posted

This past Saturday, 10 fifth grade girls from Manchester won the North Shore Flag Football Super Bowl at St. John’s Prep under the leadership of Coach Krista Jakes and Coach Jason Jakes. Their team, called the Ravens, kicked off the playoffs with a close game against the Bengals. The girls faced their first point deficit all season when the Bengals scored first, but they weren’t going home without getting to the Super Bowl, so they rallied for a comeback. Emerald Jakes pulled the last three flags on an opposing Bengal, preventing her from scoring in the final few minutes. The Ravens emerged victorious in the hard-fought, physical game with a final score of 22–20.

Moving on to the Super Bowl, the Ravens faced off against the Texans, their toughest competitor by far this season. The girls fought in the bitter cold to get past the Texans’ man-to-man defense (which was especially hard to do when both teams were wearing purple hats). Nevertheless, they pushed through and the 28–12 score landed the girls their first-ever Super Bowl win! Emerald Jakes, Sadie Potter and Jules D’Andrea, who have been playing together since the first grade, were the only ones to score touchdowns in the final game. The Ravens were undefeated this season, scoring a total of 145 points before the playoffs (and every single girl on the team contributed that that point total — whether it was a touchdown, an extra point, or a safety). After bringing Manchester to victory, the team returned to celebrate their win and an unparalleled season with food and drinks at Bravo by the Sea.
