Town Meeting and Police Dept. Funding

Posted

To the Editor,

As reported in your pages, at our recent town meeting, there was a proposal to amend the funding of our Police Department.  I believe that many residents, like myself, failed to consider that we could begin to address some of the issues raised by Black Lives Matter through our town budget process.  The amendment was worded in an unfortunate manner (no fault of the proposer, who had the courage and perspicacity to speak out) such that it was given little consideration.

I hope that we can follow-up on the intent of the proposal, which presumably was meant to address structural racism in a meaningful way.  Obvious actions would be expanding upon and further enabling the resources available to the affordable housing committee.  There are likely many opportunities to consider.
