A Look Back in Time

Posted

To the Editor:

For those of you who missed last week's "What Was Happening," it would be worth another look.

75 years ago - 1945:

There was a most humorous item about Manchester's Park Board rescinding the requirement for "males" to wear "tops" to their "swim trunks."

90 years ago - 1930:

This mentioned beach parking from Tappan Street all the way to the beach, noting that the Sullivan Field Parking Space was full.

This raised fears of another Coney Island along with major commercial development.  It prompted a buyout in the next year by a group of twenty Manchester residents in the form of a trust.

The Sullivans had acquired the former Masconomo House (Hotel) property from the Booth heirs consisting of the Hotel remnant and five cottages on ten and a half acres.  As the Depression went on, nothing could be sold for many years and all Trust members lost their investment.

But, except for two small parking lots and one house, the Sullivan Field is still largely intact and can be seen as open space through gaps in the hedge along Beach Street.

30 years ago - 1990:

This mentions the great fire at Manchester Marine.

Don't miss these.
