Local Storytelling

Tuesday, February 18, 2020 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. join storyteller, Elisa Pearmain’s workshop to learn how to create and share stories based on community, town and family memories.  Pearmain will lead with examples, techniques and activities for adults and children ages 9 and older to start the memory sharing. With a town 375 years old, we have a lot of events, characters and memories to recall. This event is limited to 24 participants. 

Saturday February 22, 2020 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Elisa Pearmain will lead with a story to start the sharing, then participants from Tuesday who would like to share will offer the memories and stories they have worked on.  The public is invited to this event and there will be a great sense of community as we recall both days recent and long ago in our tales.

Nonfiction Book Group

This group will meet on Monday, February 24, 2020 at 4:00 p.m.  The group will discuss “Crazy Brave” by Joy Harjo. Harjo is an internationally renowned performer and writer of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and was named the 23rd Poet laureate of the United States in 2019.  

Local Author Book Talk with John Judge

Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. local resident John Judge will visit the library to discuss his book The Outdoor Citizen: Get Out, Give Back, Get Active.  His book details the importance of reconnecting with nature and living an active and sustainable outdoor lifestyle.  John is the president and chief executive officer of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) and an international leader in conservation stewardship.

Museum Pass to CuriousCity

Thanks to a generous donation, the Manchester Library now offers a pass for four free admissions to the Curious City children’s museum in Peabody. Curious City is an indoor play area that hosts multiple interactive exhibits for children to enjoy learning experiences that use the power of play to nurture imagination and engage families.

Free Digital Media 

During the holidays, did you receive a new tablet, computer or smartphone? If so, check out the library’s digital lending services Hoopla Digital or OverDrive and Libby. You can stream movies, television, audiobooks, eBooks, music and more for free! Download these apps in your device’s app store or find links on the library’s website at manchesterpl.org/virtual-library. If you would like a lesson on how to use these free services, set up an appointment with Adult Services Librarian Rachael Meneades. 

Knitting and More on Wednesdays by the Hearthside 

Join us to work on an old project, start a new one or just learn how! We frequently have experienced knitters attend so questions are welcome, and the library has supplies of yarn and needles to get you started. Ages 7 and older can usually manage the coordination of knitting, so children, teens, and adults are all welcome. Crocheters, embroiderers, and all other crafters  are welcome with handwork every Wednesday, 2:30-3:30 p.m.in the Manchester by the Sea Public Library, December through March.

Adult Movie Night

Friday, February 21, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. the library will be showing a movie based on the life-changing friendship between a popular children’s television show host and the journalist hired to interview him. This movie stars Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys and Wendy Makenna. Bring your own drink, and the library will provide popcorn.

Join our circle of music, movement and simple stories on Wednesdays through March 18, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. in the Children’s Room. 

Book Nook Steam Story Time

A special family story time on Sundays through March 22, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. for children ages 2-6 with preschool teacher Melanie. NOTE: No program Sunday, February 16, 2020.

Boston Bruins Annual PJ Drive

February 14, 2020 through March 15, 2020 the library will be collecting new PJs for children of all ages for Massachusetts Department of Children & Families. Last year, Massachusetts Libraries collected 13,000 pairs.  The Boston Bruins will host raffle drawings and awesome prizes for the top donating Libraries so please donate today!

PJ Bunny Story Time

A special program to kick-off our Boston Bruins PJ Drive. Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. Join Alison Turpel, a Memorial preschool teacher, for bedtime stories and bunnies. Suitable for ages 3 +, but all are welcome.

Movie Afternoon

Join us vacation week on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. for a 2001 fantasy classic film based on the first book in the popular series by J.K. Rowling.  Filled with visual splendor, valiant heroes, spectacular special effects and irresistible characters. Children under 8 must have parent/caregiver during the movie.
