90 Years Ago – 1930 

Mrs. Clara A. Coolidge heads the list of heavy taxpayers with a tax of $6,174.80.   The Harriet J. Bradbury estate was a close second with $6,121.48. 

There was a total of 398 cast votes at the primary’s in Manchester this week.  

75 Years Ago – 1945 

As the school year has begun boys and girls in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades have the privilege of attending 50 minutes of religious instruction in the faith of their choice.  The pupils will be excused from school, on written notice from their parents. 

Manchester’s World War II veterans are slowly returning home.  Among those recently discharged are Pvt. Chelsey F. Chapman, Cpl/T James Burke, Corp. John A. Milner and C.M. 1/c William A. Ryan. 

60 Years Ago – 1960 

Nine-year-old Michael Willwerth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Willwerth of Ashland Ave., was rescued from Manchester’s inner harbor by 14-year-old Tom Watson. 

Clear skies, beautiful fall clothes on lovely models, and a delicious tea made the Fashion Show and Tea, at the Gregory B. Smith estate on Coolidge Point, for the benefit of the Sacred Heart Church. 

45 Years Ago – 1975 

Three memorial tree funds were started this summer for Kirke A. Neal, Ethel N. Carney and Frederick W. Fleetwood.  The trees will be planted by the Friends of Manchester Trees. 

The Manchester Hornets opened their 1975 season with a bang, whipping Martha’s Vineyard 26-8 in the home opener. 

30 Years Ago – 1990 

Following a stormy meeting with the Finance  Committee and other town boards, the Selectman this week postponed their call for an override election by one week to give the schools and other town departments time to confer on how they would like to handle the reductions that will be necessary to balance the town budget.  

Officers of the Amaral-Bailey Post #113 and Legion Auxiliary Unit #113 were installed at impressive ceremonies held at the Legion Home.  Pat Houghton, was installed as Auxiliary President and William MacEachern as Commander of the Post. 

15 Years Ago – 2005 

On Sunday, September 25, hikers can enjoy a two-hour guided walk along the trail that follows the colonial boundary between Manchester and Essex.  The “Ancient Line Trail” wanders back and forth along a 17th century stone wall that now lies entirely in Manchester.  The walk is sponsored by the Manchester-Essex Conservation Trust. 

The Story High School Class of 1955 recently celebrated their 50th class reunion at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, MA.  Members of the class traveled from New York, California and Florida.
