90 Years Ago – 1929

After a week and a half of intensive drill the Story High School football team has all the appearances of a fast and snappy aggregation.  A large squad is working hard under the direction of coaches Luddy and Farwell and the townspeople can look forward to some very interesting games in the in the course of the season.

Masconomo Council, Degree of Pocahontas held an interesting meeting Wednesday evening, it being the annual raising up of Chiefs which was done by Deputy Great Pocahontas, Dammey Moorehouse and her suite of Lynn.

75 Years Ago – 1944

Postmaster Swett requests the cooperation of the people of Manchester who have relatives and friends in the armed forces overseas to mail their Christmas parcels at once.  Please do not wait until the last minute.

We will all put aside everything else — for the next few weeks — and give all attention to the “Santa” boxes for our boys overseas.  The good, heavy standard boxes, obtainable at little cost at many stores are by far the safest container for your precious cargo.

60 Years Ago – 1959

During the past year, 20 members of the Memorial School staff have completed courses at the graduate level in order to improve their level of performance in the classroom.

Conomo Tribe of Redmen raised their Chiefs to their respective stumps on Wednesday evening of last week, at impressive ceremonies held in the local Wigwam.

45 Years Ago – 1974

The Board of Health discussed at length the problems with rubbish collection during recent weeks.  The new contractor is making a strong effort to make collections on the scheduled days and much improvement has been noted.  During this transition period the Board will work closely with the contractor until collections are considered satisfactory.

Plant and animal life in a salt marsh are a miracle of the extremes.  You may share in this miracle on this Sunday’s Trust sponsored Salt Marsh Walk, to be led by Sarah Fraser Robbins.  Meet in the parking lot of White Beach, September 29 at 3:30 p.m. The “walk” is scheduled to last through low tide that day —4:43 p.m., as the tide exposes extreme conditions of survival for all marsh life.

30 Years Ago – 1989

Cher, Bob Hoskins and Winona Ryder began their starring roles in Mermaids last week with the commencement of principal photography for the Orion Pictures release on Coolidge Point.  Wallis Nicita, Lauren Lloyd and Patrick Palmer are the producers and Frank Oz directs.

On Monday, October 2, the entire eighth grade will be on an all-day field trip to Mt. Chocorua as part of the Youth Challenge curriculum.  The class and their chaperones will ascend via the Champney Falls Trail which is approximately a 7.8-mile round trip.

15 Years Ago – 2004

The Manchester Club, entering the 100th year of its organization, resumed meetings on September 18with about 120 members and guests in attendance

It was a great day for Hornets football, as all three teams came away victorious.  Ellen Burgess, Leanne Ciccone and Megan Gardner sang the national anthem.
