90 Years Ago – 1929

The annual meeting of the Manchester Historical society was held at the Society rooms Wednesday evening with a good attendance.  The president, Mrs. Seddie Follett, presided and gave a hearing of the reports of the several officers and committees.

The local troop of Boys Scouts arrived home last Sunday afternoon after their annual camping trip at Ayer’s Pond, Barrington, NH.  To say that everyone had a good time would be putting it mildly as the weather man had been unusually kind this year, only a five minute shower falling during the whole stay and the ‘eats’ were the best ever.

75 Years Ago – 1944

A large group of members of the Manchester Yacht Club and their families were on hand for the annual water sports at the club house last Saturday.

Daniel Fraser who makes his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Slade, Sr., of North St., celebrated his 91st birthday.

60 Years Ago – 1959

Norman Hersey of Pulaski Drive was severely and painfully burned about the face, neck and chest when a flash gasoline fire engulfed that portion of his body in flames.  He was working on a station wagon at Standley’s Garage when the unfortunate accident occurred.

The Annual Carnival, sponsored by the Seaside Club of the Manchester Fire Department has residents anticipating a fun-filled weekend.

45 Years Ago – 1974

The Board of Assessors has established a tax rate for fiscal year 1975 in the amount of $53.50 per thousand dollars of assessed valuation.

The Youth Center at the Means Shopping Center was totally gutted by fire of unknow origin last Thursday.

30 Years Ago – 1989

Hundreds of friends, relatives, school personnel and former students gathered to pay their final respects to Bruce and Alice Magoon, both 60, a highly regarded couple who lost their lives Friday night in a tragic plane crash.

The long fight to silence the train whistles at Ashland Ave. came to an end Saturday when the State Dept. of Public Utilities ruled in favor of the Town and ordered Amtrak (MBTA) to cease whistle-blowing at the controversial intersection.

15 Years Ago – 2004

Boston Magazine’s September 2004 issue has named Manchester as the third best public school in Massachusetts.  The issue rates the top 150 schools in the state
