90 Years Ago – 1930 

The Manchester Yacht Club held their annual water sports event.  An ideal day and interesting program pleased many spectators.  

Miss Gladys Read has accepted a position in Holliston, MA as a teacher of history and music in grade seven and eight. 

75 Years Ago – 1945 

The annual Red Cross swimming picnic, the big event of the final week, was held at Singing Beach this week.  As tradition would have it, the beach was hot and the water, cold. 

Miss Margaret Curtis of Manchester won the 18-hole medal ladies golf tournament at the Rockport Golf Club with a card of 88, she also made the longest drive, 225 yards. 

60 Years Ago – 1960 

Horticultural Hall was a galaxy of color and beauty this past weekend as the North Shore Horticultural Society returned to its own hall to present its annual show. 

At the annual meeting of Explore Post 3, the Explorers of Manchester elected Alfred Clapp as President, Paul Beauvais as Quartermaster and James Anderson and Arnold Merchant as Cabinet representatives.  

45 Years Ago – 1975 

19 members of Story High Schools Class of 1940 gathered at the American Legion Hall to observe the 35th anniversary of their graduation. 

Forty-five candidates for the Manchester High School football team reported for pre-season practice session with the kind of enthusiasm that can win championships. 

30 Years Ago – 1990 

Chris Nahatis and his lovely wife Alice of Manchester, who have been with Saladmaster, Inc. since 1960 were presented the elite Grand Master Dealer award at the Saladmaster International Convention in Tucson, Arizona. 

David Pepper, a 1990 graduate of Manchester Jr. Sr. High School, has left for Fort Knox, KY, for 8 weeks of basic training in the Army Reserve program. 

15 Years Ago – 2005 

Children Singing for Children will begin rehearsals on September 16 at 21 Mill St. Children Singing for Children is a group of local children who give of their time and talent to raise money for needy children both locally and globally. 

The Twenty-first Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival will take place on Labor Day weekend, September 2nd – 4th.  It’s Gloucester’s major marine event, with participating vessels coming from ports along the Eastern Seaboard.
