The first meeting of the Dramatic Club was held Tuesday the tenth. The officers were elected as follows: President, Marian Peart, Vice President, Frances Allen, Secretary, Helen Cann, Treasurer, Hugh Burke.
F/O Redmond Fraser, Jr., son of Mr. and Mr. R. Power Fraser of Brook St., received his flight officers commission and the “wings” of an aerial navigator at Selman Field, Monroe, LA.
Manchester firemen made a very good stop of a fire that threatened to level the home of Vaughn Morgan on Ocean St., Wednesday evening shortly after 6 p.m.
Charles Howell of Pleasant St., who was forced to retire from active services with the Manchester Fire Department because of age, was the honored guest at the Monday evening meeting of the Seaside Firemen’s Club of the Manchester Fire Department.
Mr. Joseph Hyland, Director of Athletics, attended a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Mayflower League on Wednesday, Sept. 11. One of the subjects that came in for a great deal of discussion was that of crowd control at games. It was agreed that all schools would enforce the regulation that all spectators must stay behind the ropes or fence barrier put there for the protection of the players and fans.
Notice has been received by the Dept. of Public Health that certain shellfish areas have been closed due to contamination by gonyaulax tamarenses (paralytic shellfish poison).
The cause of the spectacular early morning fire that leveled two of the five buildings at Manchester Marine Corp. last Wednesday is still undetermined. The fire was brought under control at approximately 8:00 a.m. with the aid of two Coast Guard fire boats, the Gloucester police-fire boat and nine neighboring communities.
It has recently been announced that genial Bill Finneran and his pharmaceutical family have sold Allen’s Pharmacy. The new owner is Jay Sibulkin who is a most pleasant, well-informed man and very eager to accommodate his customers’ needs.
The Manchester Fire Department will be sponsoring a Fire Prevention Day, Tuesday, October 5, 2004 featuring student awareness fire education activities and surprise fire safety guest appearances from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Manchester Elementary School.
You may have noticed that the Memorial School has been getting a face lift during the last few weeks. We moved and removed trees, shrubs and perennials; trimmed, edged and weeded bushes and beds, planted numerous perennials and shrubs.
