90 Years Ago – 1930 

The Frank B. Amaral Post, Labor Day carnival was a big success.  The festivities closed with a grand display of fireworks. 

The movie theatre at Horticultural Hall changed hands this week.  Mr. Blodgett of Northwood, NH has sold out to Mr. A. Stanley Wonson of Essex. 

75 Years Ago – 1945 

An appeal for furniture and furnishings to equip the Veterans Service Center was issued this week by the Manchester War Veterans Service and Rehabilitation Committee. 

The sewing division of the Manchester Red Cross started work this week and will continue to do so until a large number of needed garments are finished for the needy in foreign lands. 

60 Years Ago – 1960 

The Manchester Oldtimers, led by Ben Burgess, Dick Floyd and Bob Bailey defeated the Manchester Town Team in their annual Labor Day game for the Jimmy Fund.  

Thirty intermediate Girl Scout of the Masconomo Maidens Troop had a noonday cookout at Singing Beach last week with Nancy Manning as lifeguard. 

45 Years Ago – 1975 

Manchester debator, Gael Donelon, now in her third year of debate, took top honors at the annual University of Massachusetts summer debate workshop tournament held in Amherst. 

Peabody Museum of Salem officials announced the opening of the first of two new rooms given by Mr. & Mrs. Charles Cotting of Boston and Manchester. 

30 Years Ago – 1990 

The recession affecting most of the Northeast and especially the state of Massachusetts, has finally pushed its way into Manchester.  Revenue projections for fiscal year 1990 were off by nearly $140,000, putting the town in an extremely precarious situation. 

H. Ralph Swem passed away at the ae of 83.  Ralph served as the Sealer of Weights and Measures for the Town of Manchester. 

15 Years Ago – 2005 

Captain Tod Biggar and OIC Clinton Hatch have volunteered to be deployed by he Federal Emergency Management Administration to the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.  Tod and Clint, along with a thousand other two-person fire service teams, will offer assistance and aid to victims in devastated areas. 

A solo exhibition of paintings, drawings, sculpture and video by Manchester resident Juni Van Dyke is currently on view at the Cantor Art Gallery, Holy Cross College in Worcester.
