90 Years Ago – 1929

The herring nuisance has continued during the week to be the chief topic of argument in Manchester beside which the political situation pares into insignificance.   Up to yesterday, conditions have remained much the same with slight improvement, but yesterday quite a change for the better was noted. This may be due largely to a change in the wind or to the use of a bleacher and disinfectant or probably to both.

75 Years Ago – 1944

Roland P. Brooks, otherwise known as “Pokey,” who fishes while Manchester sleeps, had the pleasure of seeing the “Fireball Meteor” at approximately 3:10 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Town Clerk Frank Floyd announces that the registration of new voters at the last three meetings of the Board of Registrars has been exceptionally heavy, there being 27 registered at the meeting on October 4;  35 on October 14; and 80 on October 18. This brings the total registration for the Town of Manchester up to 1,668 of which 812 are males and 856 are females.

60 Years Ago – 1959

Story High School was notified that it had again placed first in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association yearbook contest.  This is the third consecutive year that Story High yearbook has won a first-place rating.

Alex Sjorlund of Summer Street held the close attention of the Manchester Club last week, as he showed the club numerous slides of old ships and other interesting museum pieces pertaining to the days of the old square rigger.

45 Years Ago – 1974

The Manchester Bicentennial Committee announces a competition open to all Manchester school children to design Manchester’s official Bicentennial seal.  Entries will be judged on how well they express the spirit of the country’s birth and the celebration of its second hundredth birthday and Manchester’s part in the celebration.

Paul Field has been chosen the Manchester High School winner in the Bicentennial Seniors scholarship competition program currently being conducted by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

30 Years Ago – 1989

Manchester legend Bruce Leseine passed away at the age of 85.  Bruce, or Captain Dusty, as he was known by literally hundreds of friends, built a reputation that few can boast.

The Lady Hornets Field Hockey Team qualified for state tournament play under the direction of M’Lena Gandolfi.  Co-Captains of the team are Molly Heffernan and Karen Andersssan.

15 Years Ago – 2004

The Town is replacing some sewer pipe in downtown on Summer and Beach Streets.  Detours will be necessary for the next few weeks. However, please don’t let the detours keep you from visiting the downtown.  Merchants will continue to be open and will welcome your business during the construction.

It was quite a day at the 7th Annual Community Center Classic — the golf tournament to benefit the Manchester Community Center.  Held at the Essex County Club, the highlight of the day was Brian Banks winning a BMW Z-30 by making a hole-in-one on the 4th hole.
