90 Years Ago – 1930 

Frank B. Amaral Post,  American Legion, was host to the local Boy Scout troop.  Col. Charles Hanks gave the boys some sound advice on aviation. 

Rev. Taplin Winsdale, former pastor of the Baptist Church, of this time, has accepted an appointment as Chaplain of the New Bedford jail and house of correction. 

75 Years Ago – 1945 

The meeting of the PTA at Price School Hall was on the style of an open forum, or town meeting, the subject of discussion being “Compulsory Military Training”. 

V-E Day was observed Tuesday, in a quiet and peaceful manner.  All stores were either closed all day or were closed by noon.  All day, worshippers were seen entering the various churches, to offer prayers of Thanksgiving. 

60 Years Ago – 1960 

Elliott Crocker, Story High’s brilliant sophomore righthander, tossed a no-hitter at the General’s of Hamilton last week and picked up a 2-1 win for his efforts.  

The annual supper and the 50th anniversary of the Harmony Guild was observed on Monday, with charter and early members honored. 

45 Years Ago – 1975 

Nine Manchester Boy Scouts will receive the Ad Altare Dei Award, the highest Catholic award in scouting at Holy Cross Cathedral in Boston, from Cardinal Umberto Medeiros.  The scouts being honored are:  Michael and Shawn Burke, Kevin and Eric Hosman, Thomas Platt, Louis Day III, Alfred Rossi and David Singleton. 

About 52% of the 3,542 registered voters cast ballots at the town election on Monday, with 1,801 names checked  off on the voting lists.  Louis J. Barrier was reelected with new members John P. Gilmore and David Crosby. 

30 Years Ago – 1990 

After 122 years in the same family, Hooper’s Grocery was sold to employee/manager Mike O’Connor of Rockport. 

Tom Schanley, son of Darvin and Carole Schanely, of Manchester, will appear in the mini-series “People Like Us” airing on NBC.  

15 Years Ago – 2005 

The Department of Public Works is pleased to announce that the final paving of the Beach Street – Summer Street sewer project area will occur during the week of May 16th. 

Jack Pitts, a former fighter pilot, spoke to students at Manchester Essex Middle/High School about his experiences during the Second World War.  Mr. Pitts spoke to over a hundred high school students about his experiences as a P-47 “Thunderbolt” pilot in Europe.
