90 Years Ago – 1930

Raymond C. Allen gave a talk before the Horticultural Society on “Measuring Things.”

Miss Katherine Allen, daughter of Mrs. Florence Allen of School St., was elected vice-president of the Senior class at Abbot Academy.

75 Years Ago – 1945

Mr. and Mrs. R. Power Fraser of Brook Street received the welcome news today that their son Lt. R. Power Fraser, Jr. had been released from a German prisoner of war camp and awaiting shipment back to the United States.

Miss Jane S. Sargent, having completed a long and faithful term of service as Librarian of the Manchester Public Library, has retired.

60 Years Ago – 1960

William S. Frase of 12 North Street retired as a member of the Manchester Police Department, after having served that department with distinction for a period of twelve years.

A preliminary report of the population count for several cities and towns of Essex County was announce.  Manchester’s population has increased by 1039 since 1950.

45 Years Ago – 1975

The graduating class of Manchester Jr. Sr. High School has chosen to dedicate their senior yearbook to Principal Richard Howland.  Mr. Howland was honored at an annual all school assembly.

A notice appeared in the pages of The Cricket reminding residents to water both new and old trees as the town has been experiencing unusual dry weather this spring. 

30 Years Ago – 1990

Director of Public Works, Robert Moroney, recommended a slight water and sewer rate increase for the coming fiscal year, bringing the town a little closer to the regional average, and to its goals of making the Water Department self-sufficient.

Navy Lt. J.G. Victor E. Bernson, son of Estella and Victor Bernson Sr. of 159 Pine Street, recently completed the Military Justice Lawyers Course conducted at the Naval Justice School in Newport, RI.

15 Years Ago – 2005

Last Saturday morning some of the Manchester Coastal Stream Team did a spring cleaning of invasive weeds at the buffer zone adjacent to Sawmill Brook at School Street.

Chief Ron Ramos announced the Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department will participate in the May 2005 Clickit or Ticket Campaign from May 13 to June 5.
