90 Years Ago – 1931
American Home Day was observed by the Manchester Woman’s Club with a special and appropriate program, the main feature of which was an able address by Principal Geer of Story High School dealing with the problem of the home and the school from all its many angles.
The members and guests of the Manchester Club were treated to a most interesting talk by E.W. Billman, Kiwams Club President of Boston under the guise of “Something to Think About.” The speaker touched on the economic conditions around the world and its effect on Americans.
75 Years Ago – 1946
The Stork outdid Father Time in vital statistics of 1945. There were 43 births, 40 deaths and 24 marriages.
Robert C. Ball, recently discharged from the U.S. Navy, has opened the barber shop at 1 Beach Street, formerly run by the late Thomas Saco.
60 Year Ago – 1961
Manchester voters took two nights to dispose of a 35-article warrant and appropriate $1,095,023.75 for the conduct of the town’s business and other town projects during the year.
The Manchester Woman’s Club has voted to award a student nurse scholarship in the amount of $50 to be awarded annually.
45 Years Ago – 1976
After nine very rewarding years of service as a Trustee of the Public Library, Adele Ervin has decided not to run for re-election.
Mr. Thomas Cooke of University Lane has been awarded a certificate of commendation from PACT, for a puzzle-game he designed entitled “The Park and The City.”
30 Years Ago – 1991
A Court of Honor was held in the Manchester Masonic Lodge to confer upon Troop #3 Boy Scouts, Jonathan Marston and Patrick Martinack, the coveted Eagle scout award. The ceremony was officiated by Manchester’s oldest Boy Scout, Senter Herman Crane.
Sian Senecal has been accepted by Youth for Understanding International Exchange as an international exchange student. Sian will live with a family in Uruguay.
15 Years Ago – 2006
The School Building Committee met last week to begin the process of designing the new middle high school which was approved by voters in February. Development of a workplan, approval of the architects full team, and a discussion of high performance buildings have been the agenda items so far.
At the National Forensic League New England District tournament, Manchester Essex debaters swept the Public Forum division, qualifying two teams for the NFL National Finals.
