Despite stormy weather last week, five energetic adults and several enthusiastic younger Girl Scouts came to the Old Fashioned Tea and Play at the Chapel presented under the splendid direction of Mrs. Crane and her fine assistant, Mrs. Hutchings.
Thomas A. Lees was elected president of the Essex County Health Association at the annual meeting of the board of directors which took place in Danvers.
60 Years Ago – 1961
A spectacular fire swept the 34-foot Sloop “Secret” on Memorial Day afternoon in Manchester Harbor, reducing the once beautiful sailboat to a charred hull.
Ellis Chevrolet, Inc. of 50 Summer Street held their Grand Opening on last Friday and Saturday. The opening was well attended by the townspeople, who saw the very latest models of Chevrolet cars.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Manchester native, William H. James, son of Mr. and Mrs. George H. James of Old Essex Road, became one of the first permanent Roman Catholic deacons ever to serve in the Boston Archdiocese.
30 Years Ago – 1991
High School student Merry East recited Flanders Field at the Legion Lot in Rosedale Cemetery as part of the town’s Memorial Day celebration.
The Board of Selectman is seeking volunteers interested in serving on a new committee which will be formed this year to prepare for the celebration of the 350th anniversary of the Town’s funding.
15 Years Ago – 2006
On June 22nd, Town Clerk Gretchen Wood will be going to jail as part of the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s “Gloucester Lock Up”. She needs your help to reach her bail. Gretchen’s goal is to raise $1,800, the amount it takes to send three kids with MD to camp this summer.
Next Wednesday, June 7 at 5 p.m. at The Landing at Seven Central, Chris Brown, owner of CB Associates will be honored by the Manchester Branch of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce as the 2006 Business Person of the Year. Chris will become a member of a long list of local business owners who have made a difference within their community beyond the scope of their business enterprises.
