90 Years Ago – 1929

A bold holdup was staged at Prides Crossing shortly after midnight Sunday morning when T. F. Henry of Dorchester was held up at the point of a gun and robbed of $19.00.  There were three of the bandits who were in a high powered car, two of the men alighting standing on either side of Henry’s car and ordering his lady passenger to get out, then robbed him and got away before any alarm could be given which was done as quickly as possible by telephone notifying the police all along the shore.  Chief of Police Dean reported that a car answering the description of the wanted car was seen in Manchester shortly before the holdup.

75 Years Ago – 1944

Only 280 votes were cast in Manchester’s primary election out of a listing of 1600 voters.  259 Republicans voted and 21 Democrats.

The Elder Brethren Committee recently decided to postpone their annual outing for the third consecutive year, due to the prohibitive price of clams and other materials, on the account of the war conditions.

60 Years Ago – 1959

Saturday was a day of days for members of the Manchester Elder Brethren who gathered for the 81st time as an organization at Tucks Point.

Mrs. Joseph Waszak of Summer Street landed safely in Warsaw, Poland on Thursday after a delightful plane trip, her first.

45 Years Ago – 1974

Manchester’s Mariners continued to blast the ball since we last reported on them and produced 42 runs in 4 games, winning three and dropping a 1-0 decision to Topsfield.

At their annual meeting in July, the Manchester Boosters Club elected new officers for the 1974 – 1975 season.  Elected to serve as president was Carl D’Epiro.

30 Years Ago – 1989

The Town’s name change went through at Town Meeting by only 2 votes.  However, the state’s Committee on Local Affairs ruled that because of the closeness of the vote, it should be put on the Town ballot as a referendum question.

Adele Ervin, director of the National Association of Independent Schools, will retire July 31 after a 26-year career.

15 Years Ago – 2004

The Manchester Historical Society welcomed over 60 people to a reception celebrating its summer exhibit “Manchester Through the Eyes of the Artist.”  The exhibit consists of over 30 works of art, depicting scenes of Manchester seascapes, landscapes, landmarks and homes. John Huss organized the exhibit and was assisted by three Proctors – Slim, Sherry and Eliza.

The Manchester Sailing Association, in conjunction with the Manchester Yacht Club, has been active in planning to host the 2004 Junior Olympics for Massachusetts Bay, a US SAILING sanctioned event.  This event is similar to the event hosted in 1995, The Bay Bank Massachusetts Bay Junior Championship. The dates for the event are August 2, 3 and 4.
