90 Years Ago – 1929

There will be an exhibit of old fans and vases at the Historical Society Rooms on Wednesday, July 24from 3-5 o’clock.  Tea will be served by the Ways and Means Committee.

75 Years Ago – 1944

Flight Officer Joseph A. Wrobel, U.S. A.A.F., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wrobel of Bennett Street, recently received his Navigator’s “Wings” in the Army Air Corps.

The war department recently announced the award of a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lt. Ralph Lane of Old Essex Road.  Lt. Lane also has been awarded the Air Medal.

60 years Ago- 1959

The annual Family Picnic of the Manchester Club was held at Tuck’s Point last Saturday with a number of members and their families present.  A string chewing contest for husbands and wives was the amusing feature and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Wogan won first prize with Mr. and Mrs. William Silva coming in second.

The public auction of water and sewer property held Saturday, brought $140.00 from Linsky Brothers of Gloucester.  On auction were 2 GE horizontal motors, two Gould triplex pumps and miscellaneous items.

45 Years Ago – 1975

Andrew Dulavitz Sr. and son, Andy Jr., after finding and making hauling arrangements with Manchester Marine, pulled a 9 foot, 100-plus-year-old anchor to the surface near Magnolia (Grey) Beach.

The Manchester Mariners maintained their hold on third place in the ITL by posting victories over Essex, Rowley and Hamilton.  The pitching of Geoff Sones, Bobby Burgess and Kevin Kelley were key ingredients in the three victories.

30 Years Ago – 1989

Approximately 225 pounds of marijuana was found floating between Marblehead and Manchester with an estimated street value of a half million dollars, according to Chief Ron Ramos.

Kenneth A. Smith of Manchester, associate provost and vice president of research at M.I.T. has been named the new director of the Whittier College of Health Sciences and Technology at M.I.T.

15 Years Ago – 2004

A four-way stop is being installed at the intersection of Pine Street, Pleasant Street and Walker Road.  There has been much public discussion about this intersection in the past two years. There was a trial period last year.  Town Meeting recently approved funds for the installation of stop signs, a blinking light and modifications at the entrance to Walker Road.

This year’s Manchester-by-the-Sea Bazaar, sponsored by the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, promises to be a day full of fun, food and lively entertainment.  Retail bargains, non-profit organizations and an array of street entertainment will all come together Saturday, July 31.
