90 Years Ago – 1930 

The Manchester Girl Scouts were greatly entertained last Friday afternoon when they were given an instructive talk by Francis M. Andrews Jr., an instructor at the Perkins Institute for the Blind In Watertown. 

Quite a large delegation of members from Magnolia Lodge Odd Fellows went to Rockport Tuesday evening to attend a Good Fellowship meeting with the members of Granite Lodge. 

75 Years Ago – 1945 

The fire hydrants are receiving a new coat of paint, a black base with a yellow dome. 

The Manchester Electric Company has appealed to the Police Department for assistance in ending the breakage of street light globes.   

60 Years Ago – 1960 

George L. Allen, of School Street became the first man from Manchester to win a seat in the State House of Representatives in over 24 years. 

Six pioneers of Girl Scouting in Manchester were honored at a Founder’s Banquet and Program in Hamilton.  Those honored were:  Mrs. Ada Olson, Mrs. S.S. Crocker, Miss Elizabeth Jewett, Miss Laura Parker, Mrs. John H. Gavin and Mrs. William H. Coolidge. 

45 Years Ago – 1975 

Mrs. Anastatia (Syndonios) Brown, one of the town’s most highly regarded ladies, whose biggest thrill was doing for others, passed away after a brief illness. 

The Congregational Church was the setting for a recreation of a Colonial meeting that may have taken place in 1775 as the Revolution approached. 

30 Years Ago – 1990 

School Committee member Barbara Mclaughlin announced her resignation this week due to the needs of her family and business.  She has served the committee for a year and a half. 

The famed schooner “When and If”, built in 1939 for the late General George Patton broke loose from her mooring in the outer harbor and crashed upon the rocks off Boardman Avenue. 

15 Years Ago – 2005 

The Boy Scouts of Manchester’s Troop 3 are collecting food for the Cape Ann Food Pantry.  This year they are asking you to bring your donations to the Scout House at 75 School Street, on Saturday November 19th. 

Local resident, William Van Faasen, chairman of the Board of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, received the Dr. John Sandson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arthritis Foundation.
