90 Years Ago – 1929

Manchester residents obtained an excellent view of the giant dirigible Los Angeles as she passed over the town last Friday noon on her way to Gloucester, returning twenty minutes later, and after passing over the town again, headed off in a Westerly direction toward Hamilton.  She was flying low and made a most imposing appearance.

75 Years Ago – 1944

Robert Hatcher of Pine St., while driving the mail truck, was in a collision with a car driven by Miss Anne Stevens of Pine St. at the corner of Pine and Pleasant Streets.  Both cars suffered some damage, but there were no personal injuries.

The annual Playground Picnic was held Thursday at Tuck’s Point.  Some 150 children attended the gathering which meant the end of playground activities for the summer.

60 Years Ago – 1959

Frank Wood, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wood of Brook St., left last week for Holman, New Mexico, where he will study and work at Immaculate Heart of Mary rectory in that town among the Indians native to that area and many of Spanish descent who have migrated to the territory.

Phil Burgess, with a birdie 3 on the 18th hole, closed out an exciting match with Bob Davis and won the 1959 Caddy Tournament at Essex County Club.

45 Years Ago – 1974

Manchester High School debater Gail Donelan won high honors at the concluding tournament of the University of Massachusetts.

Because of the long drought we are experiencing, the Board of Water and Sewer commissioners have received permission to reactivate the emergency well located at Round Pond.

30 Years Ago – 1989

After eight years of belt-tightening under Proposition 2 ½, the Town faces a serious budget shortfall of $300,000 with the recent reduction in state aid and the increased cost of insurance.  Several creative solutions were offered at a meeting of all town department heads on Tuesday.

The Manchester Mariners, under the guidance of Manager Chuck Atwater, have won the Intertown League Championship for the 4th straight year, beating regular season first-place holder Hamilton.

15 Years Ago – 2004

Dr. Roger Francis Greenslet, retired physician, died on Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at his home in Manchester-by-the-Sea after a long illness.  He was 83.

Manchester area residents are invited aboard the Barque Picton Castle which will be visiting Manchester Harbor on August 30th and 31st. A majestic three-masted tall ship.
