90 Years Ago – 1929

Saturday was a great day at Tuck’s Point when some 300 of the war veterans of the Eight Regiment Association gathered for their annual reunion some ten companies from all parts of the state meeting for a day of  pleasure by the seashore, the weather condition being ideal, Newburyport, Marblehead, Lynn, Salem, Beverly, Gloucester, Danvers, Lawrence, Haverhill and Somerville.

75 Years Ago – 1944

The annual Swimming Classes picnic was held last week at the Eagle Head end of the beach. Louis Barrier, David James and Nancy Willmonton won the sand sculpture contest.

Ms. Dorothy Sjorlund, daughter of Alex Sjorlund, has left to join the WAVES.

60 Years Ago – 1959

Midshipman David Curran is enjoying a short leave with his mother, Bertha Curran of School Street.  He will leave on September 9 to begin his second year at the Naval Academy at Annapolis.

45 Years Ago – 1974

The price of a single issue of the Cricket was fifteen cents; a yearly subscription was $5.00.

The housekeeper at the Sacred Heart rectory was terrorized by a gunman who gained entry to the building by requesting assistance with funeral arrangements. She escaped through a rear door and called for help.

30 Years Ago – 1989

George (Jake) Maijenski dropped a hole-in-one with his nine iron off the seventh tee at Essex County Club, his career third.  

Highly regarded Manchester teacher, Ruth Ryan, 84, passed away Saturday, August 26.  She taught kindergarten from 1943–1972 for the Manchester School Department.

15 Years Ago – 2004

JP’s Harborside restaurant building, owned and operated by J.P. Demarkis for years, was torn down to make room for a single-family dwelling.

With local schools opening for the 2004–2005 year, Police Chief Ronald Ramos and officers of the Manchester Police Department ask that drivers be alert to the increased danger presented with the community’s youngsters walking and crossing the street.
