90 Years Ago – 1929

One of the largest outings of the summer was held at Tuck’s Point last Friday when some 250 of the employees of Parker Brothers, Inc. of Salem came to the Point for an all day outing and had a most delightful day of it.

75 Years Ago – 1944

One of the most severe electrical storms to hit Manchester in many years occurred last Sunday.  Electrical service was disrupted but was soon restored by the Manchester Electric Company crew.

Following a stewardship of over fifty years of faithful and efficient service to the Town of Manchester, Mr. Edward Knight, Chairman of the Board of Assessors, retired from that position on August 1.

60 Years Ago – 1959

A happy day in a country store atmosphere is promised to all who attend the Manchester Orthodox Congregational Church Fair tomorrow.

Natascha Lorenz, 17, of Washington St., president of Boston Branch 65, Armed Forces Writer’s League, will preside at the meeting Wednesday in the Army-Navy YMCA, Charlestown.

45 Years Ago – 1974

Old doll carriages and baby carriages will be on display at the Historical House during open house from 2 to 5 on the next two Wednesdays this month.

An estimated 500 people gathered at Tuck’s Point last Saturday afternoon to feast on lobster, enjoy refreshments and engage in some political banter with this year’s Democratic candidates.

30 Years Ago – 1989

Mark Needham, a 1987 graduate of Manchester Jr. Sr. High School and football standout, will suit up for the Tennessee Volunteers this season, having missed last season due to rehabilitation from knee surgery.

User fees for Athletic teams are now due.  The cost for a high school student to participate in a minimum of three sports is $95.00; for junior high students the $65.00 fee allows for participation in any junior high activity.

15 Years Ago – 2004

Several roads have recently been re-surfaced: upper Pine Street, a portion of Old Essex Road, a portion of Ocean Street and Victoria Road. The unpaved portion of Mill Street belonging to the Town was paved.  Funding was provided by the Town and State.

Renovations to the Public Library that were approved at last year’s Town Meeting are completed, they included replacement of the boiler, installation of cooling and ventilation systems and new electrical service.
