90 Years Ago – 1930 

The playground picnic was held this week at Tuck’s Point.  In the morning two teams, captained by Joe Hyland and Richard Kilpatrick played seven innings of baseball, with the Kilpatrick nine the winners.  A field day program was held in the afternoon and prizes were awarded to the winners. 

75 Years Ago – 1945 

Weather conditions were perfect for the boys of the Old Eight Regiment who gathered at Tuck’s Point for their annual reunion, there being 106 members answering the roll call, as well as 20 guests. 

Members and friends of the Manchester Historical Society had an ideal day for the annual picnic held on Society grounds. 

60 Years Ago – 1960 

One of the finest and funniest events to take place in Manchester was the costume ball, sponsored by the Manchester Arts Association Friday night. 

According to figures released by the Essex County Teachers Association, the pay scale of Manchester Teachers ranks with the best in the systems in Essex County, and very favorable with communities throughout the state.  

45 Years Ago – 1975 

A “blue lobster” a very rare type, was caught off Manchester near Little Salt Rock by local lobsterman, Michael Conlon.  This type of lobster is rare because only one in about two million lobsters are “blue”. 

Forty scouts from Troop 3 recently completed their annual week of summer camping at Camp Waskeche, located on the shores of Indian Pond, in Piermont, NH.  

30 Years Ago – 1990 

Mark Needham, son of Maury and Margie Needham of Bridge Street, will be ready to play with the University of Tennessee Volunteers football team when the season opens in late August. 

Christopher Adams, son of Penny Adams of Lincoln Street, has left for a tour of the Mediterranean.  He will be flying off the USS Saratoga in an F-18 fighter jet. 

15 Years Ago – 2005 

Children at the Manchester Summer Playground had a chance to see and learn about a Massachusetts state helicopter which landed at Brook Street playground during Safety Day held on Monday, August 8th. 

The Board of Selectman has voted to establish a Singing Beach Committee at their meeting of August 4th.
