90 Years Ago – 1929

The Board of Assessors announced the new tax rate for 1929 Monday morning which is to be $17.70 per thousand valuation, a reduction of 70 cents from last year which will be good news for our taxpayers.

75 Years Ago – 1944

A rigid program to require all home-to-work automobile drivers to carry “full car clubs” was announced by the local War Price and Rationing Board.  The plan is effective August 1 and is part of a nation-wide program to save gasoline and tires by stepping up the efficiency of carpooling, the Manchester board was advised by the National OPA Office.

60 Years Ago – 1959

The Manchester Special School Building Committee, which was organized following the annual Town Meeting, has met recently to review questionnaires which have been returned by architects who have shown an interest in the local school project.

45 Years Ago – 1974

Troop 3 conducted a successful paper drive last Saturday despite problems, the main one being the shortage of boys. Some boys were already at camp and many others were preparing to leave for Indian Pond on Sunday. An estimated 35 tons of paper was collected.

30 Years Ago – 1989

“Singing Around Town” is a children’s video tape that was supported in part by the Massachusetts Arts Lottery, as administrated by the Manchester Arts Council.  Almost forty children from the Manchester area participated in the program that was directed by Wendy Holden.

15 Years Ago – 2004

The harbor was abuzz with activity as sailors prepared their vessels for competition on the opening day at the Junior Olympics Sailing Festival at Tuck’s Point.
