90 Years Ago – 1930 

The annual Sacred Heart Church lawn fete was a pleasing success.  A large crowd was present to enjoy the many attractive features. 

Manchester celebrated the Massachusetts Tercentenary, which was one of the greatest events in the history of the town.  A parade, nearly two miles long, attracted a large crowd. 

75 Years Ago – 1945 

William Hodgdon has retired from the postal service in Manchester.  Mr. Hodgdon entered the service in 1909, when the carrier service was installed in Manchester, and was the first one to carry mail on the West Manchester route. 

The news of the end of the war was received here at 7 o’clock on Tuesday evening the first public announcement coming when 2-2 was repeated on the fire alarm system. 

60 Years Ago – 1960 

Thirty-three Explorers and Scout from Manchester arrived home Sunday, after a week at Camp Norshoco, Alfred, ME.  This was the largest group ever to attend from Manchester. 

Mis Ruth Fesserden will be the new elementary French teacher in the Memorial School for grades four through eight starting in September. 

45 Years Ago – 1975 

Mrs. Margaret Price Wilmot, teacher at the Manchester Memorial School, was awarded her Doctor of Philosophy degree from the School of Education of the University of Colorado, Boulder. 

Two Manchester High School seniors distinguished themselves when they competed in a marathon sponsored by the Town of Ipswich.  Leslie Perry was the only female competing in the 10 mile race and Alex Magoun competed in the 5 mile race.  

30 Years Ago – 1990 

The number one attraction of the seventh week of Manchester Summer Playground was the twentieth annual trip to Canobie Lake Park.  Three school buses transported 92 youngsters to and from the popular amusement park. 

The Manchester Community Center announced that it will sponsor the first annual Manchester Balloon and Chowder Festival.  The event will be held in the parking area in front of the Community Center at Harbor Point. 

15 Years Ago – 2005 

The Manchester Lion’s Club observed its 50th anniversary on Thursday evening, August 11th, at Tuck’s Point Chowder House. 

The Friends of Manchester Trees would like to say a special “Thank You” to Mark Hammond from the Cemetery Department for doing such a meticulous job weeding and mulching around trees the FOMT has planted over the years.
